Special Flight Operating Certificate (SFOC)

CUI through the offices of CCUVS has successfully developed and submitted over 150 Special Flight Operating Certificate applications (SFOC) for UAV / Drone activities to Transport Canada since 2007.  CUI’s expertise in SFOC writing and submissions for businesses and start-up companies is well documented.

Through careful consultation and working discussions with each client, Canadian Unmanned can quickly and accurately determine the needs and requirements of a specific UAV application for any region in the country.

Our standard fee for a complex SFOC application is $3,000.00 plus GST.  Client needs will be assessed on a case-by-case basis on a first come first serve basis.  For further information on the SFOC process and pricing, please Contact Us.

Please be aware that CUI charges for SFOC applications at the time they are delivered to the client.  While previous applications have an excellent track record of approval, CUI cannot guarantee that your application will ultimately be approved by Transport Canada.

New Rules From Transport Canada

New rules issued by Transport Canada 19 November 2014 have changed the landscape of applying for a SFOC. Operators may not need to make an application through a SFOC but rather operate through exemptions.

The first exemption relieves persons conducting non-recreational UAV system operations utilizing a UAV with a maximum take-off weight exceeding 2kgs but not exceeding 25kgs, operated within visual line-of-sight from the requirement to obtain a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) as required by sections 602.41 and the requirement to comply with the conditions of an SFOC as required by section 603.66 of the CARs.

The second exemption will permit non-recreational UAVs with a maximum take-off weight exceeding 2kgs but not exceeding 25kgs and with maximum calibrated airspeed of 87 knots or less to be operated away from built-up areas, airspace, controlled aerodromes, forest fire areas and other restricted locations. The exemption includes conditions which address the need for the safe and responsible use of certain UAV systems.

UAV operations conducted outside the terms and conditions of this exemption will be subject to the requirements for an SFOC.
